RIMA AND RAMADAN
Detroit Free Press, 18-aug-2010: As controversy swirls over body-painted topless images of this year's Miss Universe contestants, Miss USA Rima Fakih said says she's focused on fasting from sunrise to sunset in accordance with Islamic tradition during the holy month of Ramadan.
Fakih of Dearborn is the first Arab-American and Muslim to be crowned Miss USA. She spoke Tuesday to the Free Press from Las Vegas, where she and beauties from around the world are prepping to compete in Monday's Miss Universe contest. Ramadan started last week and continues through Sept. 10. During the month, observant Muslims don't eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. "I am fasting," Fakih said. "It's part of my religion. I wanted to be respectful." She said the racy photo shoot last week involving body paint was "pure art." A photo shows her from the back with her arm covering her chest.

EXPECTING MISS UNIVERSE BUT GETTING MISS IOWA
Miss Iowa USA 2010 Katherine Connors poses for photographers with Washington Nationals pitcher Miguel Batista before throwing out the first pitch at their MLB National League baseball game with the Philadelphia Phillies in Washington, July 30, 2010. The Nationals invited Connors to the game to make up for Batista's unintentional slight against her, telling reporters after he was booed by home fans for replacing Stephen Strasburg that the fans were disappointed the same way they would have been if they were expecting Miss Universe and got Miss Iowa instead.

LAND OF OPPORTUNITY
Miss USA 2010 Rima Fakih visits "Late Show With David Letterman" at the Ed Sullivan Theater on May 18, 2010 in New York City.
Detroit Free Press, 19-may-2010: Praising America as a land of opportunity, the new Miss USA, Rima Fakih of Dearborn, told the Free Press today her victory shows that anyone can make it in the U.S. — regardless of background. And she hopes it will inspire Michiganders to rebuild the struggling state. Touching upon the fact that she is the first open Arab American to win Miss USA, Fakih said she hopes her win will dispel anxieties.
“The fear that people had implanted since 9/11, maybe what I did can show people that, you know what, who cares what ethnicity you are,” Fakih said from an SUV driving her through Manhattan. “This is America. Everyone has been through hardships. Everyone has been through something. And that does not mean you should be afraid or should be shy to say who you really are, what your ethnicity is, and what your background is. Because America is the land of opportunity and the land of the free.”
